Le Papagayo

Posted by: Mark

7/27/10

Hello to all VEG owners and fans! Mark here.

This month brings about yet another restaurant installation. Our previous restaurant was in Solana Beach at Lockwood Table Café, however this month brings us a bit further north on the 101, to Leucadia.

Le Papagayo is the most recent restaurant to be fitted with a VEG garden. Like Lockwood, Le papagayo is using what they grow in their garden in their actual meals! They are growing 3 varieties of peppers, basil, strawberries, thyme, and cucumbers.

Chef James Montejano gets inspiration from the garden while preparing food, and tries to incorporate local foods in many of his meals. He is not just a behind the scenes person, and was a driving force behind the garden installation. He often comes to the front of the house to talk with guests and talk about the dishes he is preparing. Ask for him if you eat there, and you will not be disappointed with his personable charm and culinary expertise!

Also, find Le Papagayo on Facebook for special deals, dishes, and their live music schedule! Weekends are especially lively.

Grow big, and stay healthy.

Lockwood Table Café

6/29/10

Hello to all VEG owners and fans!

We recently installed a garden at Lockwood Table Café in Solana Beach. The restaurant offers a full organic menu and amazing paninis. The food is fresh, and now even fresher, with the addition of a VEG garden.

We are growing 4 types of specialty basil and 4 types of specialty mint in the garden. All of the food grown will be used in either drinks or actual meals. What does that mean to someone who eats there? It means they will get all of the nutritional benefits of the freshest food, the richer flavor and aroma of home grown veggies, and the peace of mind knowing and seeing that part of their meal was grown sustainably and responsibly.

Also, please check out their website and Facebook. They are located on Cedros Ave. on the right hand side of Cedros Gardens.

Grow big, and stay healthy.

A Duke's Perspective

Posted by: Mark

2/24/10

This month not only brings forth a new growing season, but also new VEG owners, including Valerie Cannon. Valerie is a Duke Environmental Management masters student and lives in North County with her daughter, son, and husband. She contacted us through the Luecadia Farmers' market after seeing one of our systems in action, and is currently having her garden installed on her 2nd story balcony.

We are excited to see her garden flourish in the upcoming growing season, and you can also as she will be sharing her experience through her student blog. As she updates the blog, you can see step by step how well our system works in practically any location!

Gardeners and Farmers Unite!

Posted by: Mark

2/24/10

Thank you to everyone who came at to the Leucadia Farmer's Market last Sunday. Vertical Earth Gardens was proud to be a vendor last Sunday in their own backyard. We talked to many people who were excited about our display and garden design. We too were excited with the amount of people who turned out, and the attention our mobile garden received!

Leucadia Farmer's Market

Because we had such a great response last Sunday, we plan to be at the Leucadia Farmer's Market for the next two Sundays (2/28 and 3/7). So if you missed us last week, or still have more questions before you decide to schedule an installation, please come by and pay us a visit.

This Sunday, we will begin taking site inspection appointments. This will enable us to visit the area where you would like your garden and customize it to your liking. Please sign up for your site inspection at the Farmer's Market, as they will fill up quickly due to the forthcoming gardening season.

Thanks, and see you Sunday!!!

Hi, and welcome to Vertical Earth's Blog. We will be updating this as much as possible to keep you up to date on our new projects and designs!

Our first commercial build is finally complete at Anderson's Nursery off of La Costa Avenue in San Diego. This build includes 40 plant sites to accommodate anything from basil to tomatoes. Anderson's has also supplied us with two glazed pots to anchor the support beams. These pots are amazing and give the system a nice finished look (pictures below).

It is located in the Garden section of the nursery next to the vegetables and herbs. If you haven't checked out this facility, it is beautiful and has an awesome knowledgeable staff.

// Who: Mark DeMitchell and Mike Tarzian design simple hydroponic gardens that maximize space and light.

// What: Applications are generally designed to grow a variety of vegetables in areas not typically associated with having a garden. Roofs, side yards, balconies, and patios can all be fitted with Vertical Earth's unique design.

// When: The company was created in the spring of 2009, and the time to live responsibly has already begun!

// Where: North County San Diego and surrounding areas.

// Why: Mark and Mike decided that the time is now to start changing the way people live and think about growing food. Instead of talking about being green, they decided to start building and living green. They combined Mark's Business/Entrepreneur degree from UCSB and Mike's extensive landscape design experience into a company, Vertical Earth Gardens.

// How: It is their goal to help the residents of San Diego county fight drought problems, grow healthy food, and conserve environmental resources. They will do it system by system and prove their value to the community.
